Water Damage in Bath & Shower Stalls
Long-term water intrusion through a tiled shower stall wall can lead to serious and costly damage, including mold growth, wood rot, and structural deterioration within the wall cavity. Water often seeps through failed grout lines, cracked tiles, or poorly sealed joints, gradually saturating the substrate and adjacent framing. Over time, this can weaken structural components and foster mold colonies, which may also spread to nearby areas such as flooring or ceilings below. During a routine home inspection, we look for signs such as loose or hollow-sounding tiles, staining or bubbling paint on adjacent walls, and elevated moisture readings using a moisture meter.
If left unaddressed, repairs can be extensive. Replacing damaged framing, insulation, and drywall can cost several thousand dollars, and a full shower rebuild—including waterproofing, tile replacement, and mold remediation—can easily range from $8,000 to $15,000 or more, depending on the extent of the damage. Identifying these issues early through a professional inspection can help homeowners avoid these high repair costs and ensure a safe, healthy living environment.
